Samar eco-tourism entrepreneurs

Region 8 has 6 new eco-tourism entrepreneurs; "Turismo Mismo" meets DOT GREET grantees


Tacloban City (March 5) -- In the very near future, Region 8 will have six new young entrepreneurs in the eco-tourism sector.

This, as the Turismo Mismo team from the Department of Tourism and GREET Secretariat, the Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation were in Region 8 on February 25, 2009 in order to meet with and assess the capabilities of the first six grantees of the Grassroots Entrepreneurship for Eco-Tourism (GREET) program, prior to grant release.

Department of Tourism Region 8 Director Karina Rosa Tiopes informed that in answer to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's Comprehensive Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program to cushion the impact of the global economic crisis on the Filipinos, the Department of Tourism will soon release in trances about P730,000.00 to the first six beneficiaries of the Grassroots Entrepreneurship in Tourism (GREET) in Region 8.

Director Tiopes said that this is just the initial funding because the CLEEP steward for Region 8, Secretary Gabriel Claudio committed to source out for more funding so that more GREET projects will be funded.

At Basey, Samar, the Turismo Mismo team met with the two other grantees, the Surfriders Club of Eastern Samar of Borongan; and the Basey Tourism Services Association of Basey, Samar.

The Surfriders Club of Eastern Samar will be given a P100,000 grant for the purchase of surfing equipment such as long board leg ropes for their Surfing School at Barangay Bato in Borongan City.

Priority will be given to the Basey Tourism Services Association which will already receive mobilization fund this week or next week, because it has already undergone several training for product development and livelihood, Director Tiopes said.

The Basey Tourism Services Association of Basey, Samar, will given P230,000 funding for its Community Based Sustainable Tourism Project which calls for the construction of a floating restaurant going to the Sohoton Cave and Natural Bridge.

The purpose of the Turismo Mismo team visit is to assess the skills of the beneficiaries so that the right training will be given them, Director Tiopes said. It is important that the grantees be given training on Tourism Appreciation; Culture of Tourism; Culture of Excellence and entrepreneurship skills in order to ensure the sustainability of the projects, Director Tiopes added.
